Six Official Tips

A week before launch, Black Tower Basement and Nordcurrent Labs posted “6 Things to Know Before Playing Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns.” Steam still serves that community announcement. No day-one patch has replaced it. This page is the readable wiki copy: the six tips in studio order, then the longer chapters those tips were pointing at. It is not a rumour sheet. Rock Paper Shotgun’s launch-week note called the package old and new at once; that is colour, not a seventh tip.

1. Every lord is different

Each Saxon lord begins with different strengths, weaknesses, and starting territories. Official advice for newcomers is still Wilfred of Ivanhoe — balanced abilities and a favourable start. The select screen matches the speech: leadership 3, jousting 4, swordplay 3. Cedric, Geoffrey, and Wolfric trade those dots; the Saxon lords page is the comparison. Master the basics, then change face. Do not learn the rules as Wolfric unless tournaments are the point.

2. Never attack a castle without a plan

In Classic and Retro you lay siege before the assault. Enough catapults weaken the garrison you must then fight. Kingdom lets you attack immediately, and the studio still says a successful siege is often the difference between a win and a costly defeat. Details live in How to Siege. The shopping list that makes a siege possible lives in army and income. The open fight after a wall is field battles. Mixing those three screens is how a first keep deletes an army.

3. Chivalry has its rewards

Saxon ladies held by Norman lords are not cutscenes. Rescues pay. In Kingdom Mode each of the six ladies grants a unique starting trait, and they send love letters as reputation grows. Classic still pays honour in campaign stats. The long chapter is Saxon ladies. The hands chapter is How to Duel and Raid.

4. Not all dice are created equal

Kingdom combat is more than luck. Precious Dice carry special effects for both the Tactical and Clash phases. Harder scenarios and more completed runs yield stronger dice. Build around them. The Kingdom Mode guide is the rules disc for hearts, fog, and cards. Retro and Classic do not use this sentence. If you opened Retro and felt insulted by silence, you picked the wrong tip.

5. Time is of the essence

Do not spend too long exploring the Kingdom map. As months pass, locations and opportunities disappear. An efficient route is as important as a winning clash. That is why a fogged tile can steal a lady, a relic, and a heart shop. Classic players should still treat the hourglass as a month of their life; almost every verb spends it. How to Play is the shared loop.

6. Saxon peace is fragile

At the start of a Classic campaign the other Saxon lords are allies. They will not attack you. They will even let armies travel. The alliance ends the moment the first Norman castle falls. After that, every lord pursues the crown. Choose the first conquest carefully. The campaign walkthrough maps that turning point so a “win” does not instantly inherit three new wars.

What this is not

This is not a patch note. As of 15 August 2026 the Steam news feed still shows launch, Jim Sachs, the FAQ, and these six tips. The studio’s FAQ still promises bug fixes and performance work without a version number. When a hotfix exists, the Updates Hub will point at it. Until then, the living documents are Getting Started, the review, and this list. Play the siege the disc already shipped.
